Review of the AICPA Website and it's position on GenAI

Supporting CPA's who are AICPA members, they are understandable risk adverse to using GenAI in their practices. In summary, AICPA & CIMA are both using and promoting generative AI tools for accounting workflows, research, training, and efficiency improvements, while emphasizing responsible use, data privacy, and compliance.

There are several key points when evaluating the content of their website and their recent official content addressing the impact of generative AI—including tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, and Gemini—on the accounting and finance profession. These points are:

  • AICPA-specific generative AI tools: The AICPA has unveiled Josi, an AI-enabled tool designed for secure, direct access to authoritative accounting guidance. Josi uses a large language model to deliver reliable research and summaries, functioning as both a learning tool and a workflow automation resource. This tool is focused on drawing only from the AICPA’s professional library, thus ensuring trusted, up-to-date results for accountants and auditors.

  • Workshops and learning labs: AICPA & CIMA offer interactive workshops and labs for finance professionals that specifically teach how to use ChatGPT and Gemini to automate tasks, analyze data, enhance collaboration, and optimize decision-making. These sessions are tailored for practitioners regardless of prior experience, and include practical advice on integrating these AI tools with workflow.

  • Guidelines and responsible use: There are published guidelines to help members employ AI responsibly, emphasizing professional standards, ethics, and compliance—especially when using AI for forensic and valuation services.

  • Productivity, efficiency, and real world use cases: ChatGPT is highlighted as a way for CPAs to boost productivity and practice efficiency, as well as for planning and gaining actionable insights. Copilot, integrated into the Microsoft ecosystem, and Gemini, with Google Workspace connections, are similarly featured for practical automation and collaboration benefits.

  • AI-powered modernization: The organization actively uses AI to upgrade and maintain its course library and metadata, making it faster to tag and organize training resources—saving months of effort for staff and members.

  • Adoption trends and enthusiastic outlook: Surveys and reports reflect strong enthusiasm for AI adoption in accounting. The profession is rapidly evolving with AI and generative tools at the core of process transformation, data automation, and knowledge management.

My observation from evaluating their website and reading their guidelines is use AI responsibly, ALWAYS practice a human in the loop, and adhere to their guidelines as members. In no way do they outright say don't use it.
